Web development, front-end work, interfaces and the small details that make digital products easier to use were a big part of what I did. Over time, my work naturally expanded into systems and network infrastructure, software, licensing, procurement, cloud services, security, digital products and the operational side of running technology.

I never really saw these as completely separate disciplines.

A technical decision affects cost. A procurement decision affects operations. Infrastructure affects the people using it. A good interface can solve problems that more technology cannot. And sometimes the best technical solution is simply not to add another piece of technology.

That way of thinking has probably shaped my career more than any particular programming language, framework or product.

Today, I run Akidava, the company I founded to bring much of that experience together. My role is no longer confined to being a developer, a systems person or a manager. Depending on the problem, I may be thinking about infrastructure one moment, software or licensing the next, then procurement, user experience, a business process or how all of those pieces should work together.

Years ago, a close friend described me as a Swiss Army knife.

It sounded funny at the time, but it has turned out to be a reasonably accurate description. I enjoy understanding how things work, moving comfortably between different disciplines and, most importantly, connecting them when a problem does not fit neatly into one box.

But work is only one part of who I am.

I am also a happy husband and a father who is trying to do that job well. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate that being present, dependable and curious matters just as much outside work as it does inside it. Some of the most important things in life do not have roadmaps, documentation or elegant technical solutions. You simply keep learning, adjusting and trying to do a little better.

I am naturally curious, fairly particular about details, and not especially interested in complexity for its own sake. I like useful technology, well-designed objects, clear interfaces and systems that quietly do what they are supposed to do.

I also have a strong preference for simplicity.

Not the kind that comes from ignoring complexity, but the kind you reach after understanding it well enough to remove what is unnecessary.

That is probably the common thread behind most of the things I build, buy, design, manage, care about or spend too much time thinking about.

E-Mail : me @ serhankarakaya.com Hello, I’m Serhan Karakaya.
